Amedeo Modigliani's artistic career was short.

His beginnings take place in Livorno, in the early 1900s. Hence, the decision to move to Paris, to personally experience the atmosphere and the great events that took place there. He paints some canvases, mainly nudes and portraits. He makes drawings, watercolors.

At first his painting is characterized by nervous and sharp brushstrokes, a legacy of interest in Klimt and Toulouse-Lautrec (The Jewess, c.1908). Cézanne's discovery introduces important changes, both in terms of composition, as well as in terms of color and painting technique. The general layout, more constructed than the very first canvases, denotes the influence of Cézanne, as well as the pose and solidity of the portrayed figures: eg. Portrait of Paul Alexandre and The Cellist, both from 1909.

In 1909 Modigliani moved to Montparnasse. Here the really important turning point takes place: the friendship with Constantin Brancusi, the contact with ancient and primitive art, the encounter with sculpture. And it is precisely to sculpture that Modigliani begins to turn to starting from 1909, on the impulse of Brancusi. The subjects are of two types: heads of women and female figures in the pose of caryatids. These experiments are interspersed with some paintings and drawings on the same subjects.

In these works the forms are elongated, schematic, even harsh in their essentiality. He immediately catches the eye of the direct relationship with Cycladic art and African sculpture. In the same way, the artist's aspiration for a pure form, devoid of ornament and decoration, is clearly evident. The material contributes to making the effect even more marked: stone, simple stone, not marble, plaster or clay.

Sculpture represents a parenthesis for Modigliani. In fact, starting from 1914 he abandoned it completely, to devote himself exclusively to painting and drawing. But Modigliani no longer conceives of painting as before. Painting becomes a model of subtraction and synthesis.
