Una Meteora Dell'Arte Pino Pascali

the Great Mother and Venus, the Sea, the Earth, the Fields, tools and agricultural rites

Pascali's artistic career is short and dazzling. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1959 and immediately began to get noticed as a set designer. He had made sketches, drawings and "shorts" for "Carosello" and other TV broadcasts, as well as drawings and models of sailing ships, trains, armor. On his behalf he experimented intensely.

In 1965 he had his first solo show, in Rome in the prestigious “La Tartaruga” gallery. In just three years he had attracted the attention of the greatest Italian art critics. Just in the summer of 1968 he had participated by invitation with a personal room at the 34th Venice Biennale.

It was his consecration: after his death, with the exhibition still open, he was awarded the International Sculpture Prize. Sculptor, set designer, performer, Pascali brilliantly and creatively combines primary and mythical forms of Mediterranean culture and nature (the Great Mother and Venus, the Sea, the Earth, the Fields, tools and agricultural rites) with the infantile forms of Game and Adventure (prehistoric, zoo and sea animals, war toys, the world of Tarzan and the jungle, caterpillars and worms, disguises, Pulcinella).

He translates this world of the imagination into monumental forms and essential, concise structures, such as the Apulian Romanesque and the medieval bestiary of his churches; but at the same time they refer to the icons of the rampant mass culture (comics, cinema, fashion). he creates his "false sculptures" with fragile and ephemeral materials (canvas, wood, steel wool, acrylic hair, straw, raffia). In this way, it gives its original critical response (Italian and Southern) to the new trends that came from America: Pop Art, Minimal Art. It precedes Arte Povera, Body Art, the conceptual art of the seventies.

Born on 19 October 1935 in Bari, after a short period spent in Albania, in Tirana, Pino Pascali goes to live with his family in Polignano a Mare, about 35 km from the Apulian capital, before the Second World War ends. Subsequently, he leaves the studies undertaken in Bari to finish his artistic studies in Naples.

On 11 September 1968, Pino Pascali died tragically and prematurely in Rome, perhaps the greatest Apulian artist, certainly the most famous internationally throughout the twentieth century. Pascali was only 33 years old. He was born in Bari to parents from Polignano a Mare on October 19, 1935. After the tragic end (he was hit by a car while racing on his motorbike) his body was interred in the small cemetery of his hometown.
