Cristina García Rodero è nata a Puertollano, in Spagna. Ha studiato pittura alla Scuola di Belle Arti dell'Università di Madrid, prima di dedicarsi alla fotografia. Si è poi qualificata come insegnante e ha lavorato a tempo pieno nel campo dell'istruzione. Per i successivi 16 anni, si è anche dedicata alla ricerca e alla fotografia di feste popolari e tradizionali – religiose e pagane – principalmente in Spagna ma anche in tutta l'Europa mediterranea. Questo progetto è culminato nel suo libro España Oculta pubblicato nel 1989, che ha vinto il "Premio Libro dell'anno" al Festival della fotografia di Arles.
Lo stesso anno, García Rodero ha vinto anche il prestigioso W. Eugene Smith Foundation Prize. Il valore documentario ed etnologico del suo lavoro è notevole, ma la qualità estetica della sua fotografia la rende più di una semplice registrazione visiva.#
Cristina García Rodero was born in Puertollano, Spain. You studied painting at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Madrid before turning to photography. She then qualified as a teacher and worked full time in education. For the next 16 years, she also devoted herself to researching and photographing popular and traditional festivals - religious and pagan - mainly in Spain but also throughout Mediterranean Europe. This project culminated in her book España Oculta published in 1989, which won the "Book of the Year Award" at the Arles Photography Festival.
The same year, she García Rodero also won the prestigious W. Eugene Smith Foundation Prize. The documentary and ethnological value of her work is remarkable, but the aesthetic quality of her photography makes it more than just a visual recording.
