Nato a Milano nel 1942, Uliano Lucas cresce nel clima di ricostruzione civile e intellettuale che anima il capoluogo lombardo nel dopoguerra. Ancora diciassettenne, inizia a frequentare l’ambiente di artisti, fotografi e giornalisti che vivevano allora nel quartiere di Brera e qui decide di intraprendere la strada del fotogiornalismo.
Born in Milan in 1942, Uliano Lucas grew up in the climate of civil and intellectual reconstruction that animates the Lombard capital after the war. Still seventeen, he began to frequent the environment of artists, photographers and journalists who then lived in the Brera district and here he decided to take the path of photojournalism.

La fotografia di Uliano Lucas ha saputo raccontare come nessun’altra immagine la condizione di vita e le trasformazioni sociali che avvenivano negli anni 60 e 70 nel nostro paese. Le sue immagini sono uno spaccato di vita quotidiana, i volti, le azioni, i luoghi sono quelli del trasferimento di massa dalle regioni meridionali del sud a quelle del nord della nostra amata penisola, i nuovi arrivati che si traferiscono dai paesi rurali nelle grandi città in espansione della pianura Padana. La ricerca febbrile di un contatto , di un indirizzi presso il quale incontrare un paesano già trasferito, le stazioni ferroviarie affollate di famiglie isolate, che ebbero come unica solidarietà iniziale solo quella di altri emigrati nelle medesime condizioni, il lavoro nel fabbriche nelle catene di montaggio, la ricerca di un alloggio , quasi sempre una casa di ringhiera con la latrina in cortile, da poco lasciata dai milanesi divenuti nel frattempo più ricchi. Le rivendicazioni politiche e sociali dei proletari sfruttati nelle fabbriche. Penso che le fotografia di Uliano abbiano influenzato intere generazioni di fotografi, nei visi, e negli atteggiamenti delle persone ritratte ognuno di noi non più giovanissimo può rievocare momenti di vita vissuta e intensi ricordi di vita familiare, quando il fare sacrifici, era l’unico biglietto di sola andata verso una condizione di vita migliore.

Uomo colto e visionario, Lucas lavora in quel giornalismo fatto di comuni passioni, forti amicizie e grandi slanci che negli anni ’60 e ’70 tenta di opporre una stampa d’inchiesta civile all’informazione consueta del tempo, poco attenta ad una valorizzazione della fotografia e imperniata sulle notizie di cronaca rosa e attualità politica.
